An Update on How the Northern Lights Tier is Awarded

Hello everyone! I have an important update about the Northern Lights Tier, the rarest membership tier handed out once a year to as many as two members, but as few as zero can happen as well. I am making a small change to the eligibility process to make sure it is as fair and consistent as possible for everyone.

To be eligible for consideration for the Northern Lights Tier, new members must have an activated account by January 1st of the year the award is handed out. This new deadline allows me to fairly consider all eligible members, as everyone will have at least five months of activity in the Swagnilla Ice community before the award or lack of awarding it is announced on June 1st.

How It Works: Examples

To make this clear, here are a couple of examples:

  • Alice registers for a free membership on November 25, 2025 and activates it two days later. Because her registration and activation occurred before the January 1, 2026 deadline, she is eligible to be a candidate for the Northern Lights Tier awarded on June 1, 2026 and going forward. This eligibility does not guarantee a spot, but merely grants her the chance.
  • Bob registers for a free membership on January 15, 2026 and activates it the same day. Because his registration was after the deadline, he is not eligible to be a candidate that year. However, he will be considered for the Northern Lights Tier awarded on June 1, 2027 and going forward.

This change is the only one to the Northern Lights Tier process. It remains a free and rare reward, and I hope this change encourages everyone to get involved sooner. If you are not a member yet and want to be considered for the next award, be sure to register and activate your account before the January 1st deadline.

I started Swagnilla Ice to create a fun, engaging space for everyone who is above the age of thirteen (13). While you might be here for our shop or the creative content, becoming a member of our community gives you so much more.

Everyone who joins starts as a Free Member when you sign up via BuddyPress. This tier is completely free and gives you basic access to our site, which includes comment posting and basic forum privileges. This tier is supported by ads. It’s important to know that these aren’t third-party ads. The ads displayed on Swagnilla Ice are paid for by other members of the community and are controlled by the same staff that produces our content and moderates the community. From there, you can choose to upgrade to a paid tier at any time to unlock more features and support what I’m building.

I believe in the power of public discussion. By keeping all conversations in our community forums and in the comments, I have created a secure and transparent space for everyone to connect and share ideas. This approach is especially important for protecting our younger members. No one can hide behind a private message, because there are no private messages.

Upgrade Your Experience

  • Tip Jar Member: For just $1 a month, you can become a Tip Jar member. You’ll still have ads, but you get to show your support for me and the community. As a thank you, I’ll place a sign with your name or username in my public Minecraft worlds!
  • Full Member: For $5 a month, you’ll get the full Swagnilla Ice experience. This tier removes all ads from your Browse, gives you full access to all exclusive content, and includes a sign in my public Minecraft worlds.

Beyond the Tiers

As a member, you’ll also get access to other valuable features, including our shop, where you can buy exclusive merchandise and impressions packages to advertise your own projects. Additionally, if you’re a member in good standing, you could be selected for the extremely rare and prestigious Northern Lights Tier. This is a free, invitation-only tier I hand out once a year to 0-2 members on June 1st to recognize their outstanding contributions to the community.
